Canada's first national urban park turns 10

Rouge National Urban Park

Since its official establishment on May 15, 2015, the Rouge has grown into one of the largest and best-protected urban parks in the world, spanning over 79 km² of forests, wetlands, meadows, rivers and farmland.

A decade of protecting nature in an urban environment

Rooted in over 10,000 years of Indigenous presence and stewardship, the Rouge protects a rich history of nature, culture and agriculture. From restoration projects to creative co-design, Parks Canada proudly collaborates with First Nations partners on every aspect of the park’s management and operations.

Rouge National Urban Park is a testament to the power of grassroots action, building on over 50 years of citizen-led advocacy and collaboration across all levels of government. The Rouge has seen countless community-driven achievements and remains a powerful reminder of the importance of protecting these lands for future generations.

Today, the Rouge is a vibrant hub of biodiversity, cultural heritage and community connection. The park is home to over 2,000 species living in diverse habitats, all within reach of the 20 percent of Canada’s population. Parks Canada is also committed to safeguarding the fertile farmland of the Rouge, offering a unique model of human-wildlife coexistence and sustainability.

As Parks Canada celebrates this 10-year milestone, we thank you – our partners, advocates and supporters – for your continued dedication. Together, we are building a legacy that will inspire generations to come.
