WINTER ROAD THROUGH WOOD BUFFALO NATIONAL PARK TO CLOSE FOR THE SEASON ON WEDNESDAY, APRIL 5th, 2023

Issued: April 03, 2023

FORT SMITH, NT / FORT CHIPEWYAN, AB, April 3, 2023 — The winter road through Wood Buffalo National Park from Fort Smith to Fort Chipewyan is set to close for the season on Wednesday, April 5th, 2023, effective at 12:00 p.m. local time.

Parks Canada would like to thank users of the winter road for their patience as crews worked to maintain the road throughout a challenging season. Motorists who plan to use the road prior to the closure date are encouraged to use increased caution due to warmer weather, as it may impact the condition of the road. It is strongly advised that only 4x4 or AWD vehicles with high clearance use the winter road at this time.

Ice roads from Fort Chipewyan to Fort McMurray are maintained by the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo. Updates for that section can be found here: https://www.rmwb.ca/en/roads-and-construction/winter-roads.aspx

As spring approaches, roads in Wood Buffalo National Park may be affected by spring run off, melting conditions and higher precipitation levels.
