Bulletins
Waterton Lakes National Park
Closure: Akamina and Red Rock Parkways
Issued: June 19, 2025
Ends: June 21, 2025
Temporary closure due to weather: Akamina Parkway and Red Rock Parkway
What’s happening?
• Environment Canada has issued a Special Weather Statement for Waterton Lakes National Park.
• Parks Canada has closed Akamina Parkway and Red Rock Parkway to vehicle traffic.
Why is this happening?
• Up to 200 mm of precipitation has been forecasted here this weekend (Friday through Sunday). Snow is expected at higher elevations.
• A prolonged rain event could result in potential rock and debris slides along steep terrain, as it did in 2023.
• Strong winds are also expected Saturday evening. This could cause tree damage, especially in fire-affected areas.
• We are closing these roads until this storm has passed and damage, if any, can be assessed and mitigated. Resident and visitor safety is a top priority for Parks Canada.
• Waterton is open, but please adjust your planned activities accordingly. Rescue operations can be challenging in inclement weather.
