Bear Warning: Lake Minnewanka Trail and Campgrounds

What: Special caution is recommended when travelling and camping in this area.

Where: Lake Minnewanka Trail and Campgrounds (Lm8, Lm9, Lm11, Lm20, Lm22, and Lm31.)

Why: Multiple instances of black bears making contact with tents in recent weeks.

 

Be prepared to encounter a bear at any time in this area:

·        All food, pet food and anything with odours must always be closely attended or stored securely in food storage lockers.

·        Dishes and containers with food residue should be cleaned immediately and stored securely in food storage lockers.

·        Keep your clothing, sleeping gear, and tent free of food odours and other scented items.

·        Only burn wood in the fire pit, never food scraps or food containers.

·        Everything packed in, must be packed out.

·        Be vigilant and watch for fresh bear signs (e.g. tracks and droppings).

·        Keep a distance of at least 100 meters from bears.

·        Carry bear spray and know how to use it.

·        Keep pets on leash and under physical control (no pets permitted in area between July 10 – September 15)

·        Supervise children at all times.

·        Report all bear sightings and details (size/colour, behaviour, ear tag colour and number) as soon as possible to Banff Dispatch at 403-762-1470
