Banff Springs Snail Habitat in Banff National Park
To protect the endangered Banff Springs Snail (Physella johnsoni) and its habitat from disturbance by humans, the following areas of Banff National Park of Canada are closed to entry by order of the superintendent, pursuant to the authority granted in subsection 7(1)* of the National Parks of Canada General Regulations:
Thermal Springs within the Cave and Basin National Historic Site of Canada
1. The thermal spring in 'The Cave' which is located adjacent to the entrance lobby in the main building;
2. All thermal springs adjacent to the outdoor boardwalk above and below the Cave and Basin building;
3. The outdoor thermal spring known as 'The Basin' and the enclosure surrounding it, both located adjacent to the Bathing Pavilion. Note that the walkway adjacent to 'The Basin' is open to the public during the posted hours of operation.
Thermal Spring known as the 'Kidney Spring'
The outdoor thermal spring known as 'Kidney Spring' and the enclosure surrounding it, located adjacent to Mountain Avenue and across the road from the Rimrock Hotel.
Entering any of the above mentioned areas is PROHIBITED at all times, as is handling or disturbing any organic matter and/or aquatic wildlife within said thermal springs.
* Subsection 7(1) of the National Parks of Canada General Regulations states: The superintendent may, where it is necessary for the proper management of the Park to do so, designate certain activities, uses or entry and travel in areas in a Park as restricted or prohibited.
