BEAR WARNING: Skoki Trails and Johnston Creek Trails

WHAT: Several grizzly bears in the area displaying defensive and aggressive behavior. Bears have approached hikers.
WHERE: Skoki trails including Skoki Lodge, Merlin Meadows, Baker Lake, Ptarmigan Lake, Jones Pass, and Cotton Grass Pass. Johnston Creek trails, including trails to Luellen Lake and Mystic, Badger and Pulsatilla Passes. See attached map.
WHY: Several bears have been frequenting the area due to seasonal food source. Extra caution is advised.
Be prepared to encounter a bear at anytime in and around this area. Safe practices include:
• Hiking parties recommended to travel in a group size of four or more.
• Securing all wildlife attractants.
• All food and garbage must be disposed of in a proper receptacle.
• Pay attention for bears when travelling in this area.
• Make noise when hiking and cycling.
• Keep pets on leash and a close eye on children.
• Carry bear spray and know how to use it.
Report all bear sightings immediately to the Visitor Centre or Banff Dispatch at 403-762-1470
