BEAR WARNING: Johnston Creek Trails to Ptarmigan Lake

WHAT: Several grizzly bears in the area displaying defensive and aggressive behavior. Bears have approached hikers.
WHERE: Johnston Creek trails, including trails to Luellen Lake and Mystic, Badger and Pulsatilla Passes. As well as Baker Lake and Ptarmigan Lake Valleys. See attached map.
WHY: Several bears have been frequenting the area due to seasonal food source. Extra caution is advised.
Be prepared to encounter a bear at anytime in and around this area. Safe practices include:
• Hiking parties recommended to travel in a group size of four or more.
• Do not leave food, garbage, and other wildlife attractants unattended.
• All food and garbage must be disposed of in a proper receptacle.
• Pay attention for bears when travelling in this area.
• Make noise when hiking and cycling.
• Keep pets on leash and a close eye on children.
• Carry bear spray and know how to use it.
• Report all bear sightings immediately to the Visitor Centre or Banff Dispatch at 403-762-1470
