Bear Warning: Boom, Arnica, and Twin Lakes Trails

What:  Special caution is recommended when travelling through or recreating in this area.

Where: Boom, Arnica, and Twin Lakes Trails, Twin Lakes Campground, and surrounding area (see map).

Why: A cinnamon-coloured black bear exhibited concerning behaviour. The bear approached closely and followed a solo hiker.

Be prepared to encounter a bear at any time in this area: Carry bear spray and know how to use it. Hike in groups of four or more. Stay alert, make noise, and watch for fresh bear signs, including tracks and scat. 

If you encounter a bear: Stay calm. Stay together. Never run. Keep the bear in sight. Back away slowly. Stay at least 100 metres away from bears. Keep pets on a leash and under physical control. Supervise children closely. 

Report all bear sightings and details (size & colour, behaviour, ear tag colour and number) as soon as possible to Banff Dispatch at 403-762-1470.
