Free admission and discounted overnight stays

Parks Canada is offering free admission and discounted overnight stays at participating locations, from June 20 to September 2, 2025 inclusive.


This hike is not for everyone. Before booking, please review this essential safety information to decide what is right for you and your group.

Permits and reservations are required between June 5 and September 13.

For information on shoulder-season permits (April 15 to June 4 and September 14 to October 31), please email chilkootinfo@pc.gc.ca.

Permits are not required between November 1 to April 15.


Reserving your permits


It is illegal to cross the international border in either direction at the Chilkoot Pass.


Reservations for the Canadian and US sides of the trail open June 4th for hikes between June 5 and September 13.

Mandatory hike orientation

In-person orientations are mandatory for all hikers. You will be issued your trail permit at your orientation. Please plan to attend an orientation session within 2 days of your Chilkoot Trail hike.

For Canadian-side hikes: orientations are available Monday through Friday by appointment only at the S.S. Klondike in Whitehorse. Call 867-667-4511 to book.

For US-side hikes: orientations are available at the Trail Center in Skagway, AK.

Cancellation policy
  • Permit fees are 100% refundable up to 3 weeks (21 days) in advance of your trip start date
  • 50% of permit fees are refundable within 21 days of your trip start date
  • Reservation fees are non-refundable
  • Cancel online or by phone at 1-877-RESERVE and be prepared to provide your booking number, the name the booking was made under, the number of permits being cancelled, and a phone number where we can reach you
