Regular guided tour

Four adult women and two adult men take a group tour of Madame Cartier's room at Sir George-Étienne Cartier National Historic Site, as a Parks Canada guide explains 19th-century bourgeois traditions and life.

Let the guide take your group through the different rooms of Sir George-Étienne Cartier's Victorian home.

Themes: an overview of the political life of Sir George-Étienne Cartier and a presentation of the bourgeois ways of life and the distinctive features of the Victorian home (west side only).

Audience: adult groups of 10 to 25 people. This can be a family group, a group of friends, a social club, a group of employees, etc.

Period: April to December

Length: 60 minutes

“A Victorian Christmas” special guided tour

A guide from Sir George-Étienne Cartier National Historic Site leads a special “Victorian Christmas” tour with a group of adults, explaining the details of the holiday table set in the dining room of the authentic Victorian house.

With a guide, explore the magic of the holidays as revealed in the Victorian home of Sir George-Étienne Cartier.

Themes: the Christmas tree and ornaments, etiquette and traditional cooking, Santa Claus, games, Christmas cards and gifts.

Audience: adult groups of 10 to 25 people. This can be a family group, a group of friends, a social club, a group of employees, etc.

Period: from Monday, November 24 to Thursday, December 18, 2025, inclusive

Length: 60 minutes

Activities for French learning groups

“Welcome at the Cartiers' guided tour

Two young men and two young women take a group tour of the Sir George-Étienne Cartier National Historic Site, and gaze at the authentic décor of Madame Cartier's bedroom.

Suggested content: through George-Étienne Cartier's political work, students approach different aspects of the creation of Canada as we know it today. Like Cartier, students are invited to imagine, discuss and share their thoughts of an ideal society.

As the group explores the Victorian home of Sir George-Étienne Cartier, an introduction to the good manners and rules of etiquette in use during the 19th century becomes a pretext for vocabulary and/or conversation practice.

  • A tour of the only Victorian house in Montreal open to the general public, led by a guide.
  • Introduction to the rules of etiquette that defined social relations at the time.
  • Skills practice in listening, reading, observing and speaking.
  • Small-group discussion leading to consensus and presentation of discussion results.

Audience: intermediate and advanced French learning groups

Capacity: two (2) groups of 20 to 25 people each

Period: April to December

Schedule: Monday to Friday, from 9 am to 5 pm

Length: 60 to 75 minutes

Language offered: French only

A guide from Sir George-Étienne Cartier National Historic Site explains the details of the vintage Christmas tree in the main living room of Sir Cartier's authentic Victorian home.

Suggested content: an extraordinary visit awaits students at Sir Cartier's home, decked out in its finest holiday ornaments. The group is invited to dive into the world of a 19th-century bourgeois family and discover the Christmas preparations.

  • A tour of the only Victorian house in Montreal open to the general public, led by a guide.
  • An introduction to the origins and popular festive traditions of the time.
  • Presentation of Christmas Eve, gift distribution and decorations.
  • Discussion of students' holiday customs.
  • Skills practice in listening, reading, observing and speaking.
