Red Bay Basque Whaling Station UNESCO World Heritage Site

For more than 400 years, this Basque chalupa – North America’s oldest known whaling boat – lay silent beneath the frigid waters of Red Bay, Labrador.

The Red Bay Basque Whaling Station in the Town of Red Bay, a community on the Labrador Straits, has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site by the World Heritage Committee. The Committee is holding its 37th session in Phnom Penh, Cambodia June 17-27.
