September 7 is the last day of free admission and discounted camping and overnight stays with Parks Canada and the Canada Strong Pass. 

What to bring

For all bookings:

  • Bedding and/or sleeping bags, blankets and pillows.
  • Food, drinks and water containers.
  • An axe, matches or lighter
  • Towels, flashlight, rain gear, sunscreen and insect repellent.
  • Warm clothes (bring various layers to help you dress for the weather).
  • Camera (drones are not permitted at the national historic site including campsites).

Front Country Camping:

  • Tent, trailer or camper.
  • Power bank/battery pack (no power outlets on site).
  • Dining tent and camping chairs.
  • Cooking equipment - camping stove, pots, pans, dishes and cutlery.

Tipis and Métis Trappers Tents:

  • Cooking equipment - camping stove, pots, pans, dishes and cutlery.
  • Power bank/battery pack (no power outlets on site).

Trapline Cabins:

  • Charcoal (for outdoor grill).

Camping rules and regulations

In addition to keeping a clean campsite, a number of regulations are in effect to ensure campers have a safe and enjoyable experience.

General
  • Put garbage in the provided wildlife-proof bins.
  • Check-in time: 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. (Heritage camping: 3 p.m. to 8 p.m.)
  • Check-out or re-register by 11 a.m.
  • There is no Internet/Wi-Fi access provided.
  • Heritage Camping: A maximum of 1 vehicle is permitted on each site.
  • Trailer Campground: A maximum of 1 vehicle and 1 wheeled camping unit are permitted on each site.
  • Walk-in Tenting: 1 small or medium tent maximum. Vehicles are not permitted. Foot access only (50 m). Park in designated area.
  • No shows: If you do not check in by 11:00 a.m. the next day, your reservation is deemed a no show and your site becomes available in the reservation system.
  • Day visitors must park in visitor parking.
  • Day visitors must leave the campground by 11:00 p.m.
  • Day visitors must stop to register at the office and pay entrance fees or provide a Parks Canada Discovery Pass or a Rocky Mountain House National Historic Site Annual Pass.
  • Maximum stay – 14 nights.
Permits
Campers must acquire the following permits to camp at Rocky Mountain House National Historic Site Campground:
  • National Historic Site Entry Fee
  • Camping permit - available online, over the phone (1-877-RESERVE) or at the campground kiosk. Upon arrival, check-in at the campground kiosk.
Campground etiquette

You can ensure you're a good neighbour, and guarantee a good camping experience for yourself, by respecting and adhering to the following guidelines:

  • Children - to ensure the safety of your children, please supervise them at all times. Children may become lost in the campground or may unknowingly trespass on a neighbouring campsite.
  • Driving - respect the posted speed limits and remain alert while driving in the campground. Trees may obstruct your view and pedestrians, especially children, may suddenly dart out onto the road. Watch for stumps close to the road and campsites that might be hidden in the grass.
  • Recycling - bottles and cans (refundable containers) can be recycled in the provided wildlife-proof bins.
  • Washing Dishes - use the outdoor sink or a personal basin for washing dishes. Do not use the sinks inside the bathrooms. Dump dish water down outdoor sinks. Do not dump dish water in bushes or on the ground.
  • Washing Laundry – please use your own tub and dump water down the outdoor sink. Laundry facilities can be found in the Town of Rocky Mountain House.
Quiet hours
  • Quiet hours are in effect from 11 p.m. to 7 a.m.
  • During quiet hours, music and campfires are prohibited.
  • Only site occupants are allowed on a campsite after 11 p.m.
Generator Use:
  • Trailer Campground: 9:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. & 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.
  • Generators are NOT permitted at Walk-in Tenting and Heritage Camping.
Campfires
  • Campfires are only permitted in designated fire pits.
  • Fire wood is available for purchase onsite. No outside firewood is permitted. Use only firewood purchased. It is illegal to collect or burn any wood from the forest. Even twigs and deadwood play an important role in the forest ecosystem!
  • Times - Campfires are permitted from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily. Fires must be attended at all times and completely extinguished before leaving the area or going to sleep.
Alcohol and cannabis policies
  • Alcohol may only be consumed on a registered campsite.
  • Alcohol is not permitted in day-use or public areas including picnic shelters.
  • Cannabis may only be consumed on a registered campsite or trails and is not permitted in day-use or public areas including the picnic shelter.
  • During the July long weekend, a complete ban on the possession of alcohol and cannabis is in effect.
Pets
  • Pets must be on a leash 3 meters or less at all times.
  • Pets are not to make excessive noise or disturb other persons.
  • Please pick up after your pets. Doggie bags are located at several different areas of the site.

Failure to comply: Parks Canada staff are here to help and may enter your site to remind you of these regulations. Campers who fail to comply with keeping a clean site and other regulations may have their camping permit revoked without a refund. Campers may be charged under the Canada National Parks Act and/or other national parks of Canada regulations, be required to appear in court, and could pay fines up to $25 000. The permit holder is responsible for ensuring their campsite is maintained in a satisfactory condition. Parks Canada staff may enter open and plainly visible areas of an unattended campsite to remove and secure plainly visible wildlife attractants. Keep your campsite clean to reduce the risks to your personal safety and to wildlife.

Front-Country Camping

Trailer Campground:

  • Includes a fire pit and a picnic table.
  • Unserviced trailer sites.
  • Trailer and RV’s up to 8 meters (27’). Tents allowed.

Walk-in Tenting:

  • Community picnic shelter and food lockers available.

Equipped Camping

No gear? No problem. Tackle the great outdoors with a fully equipped camping kit. This experience includes 6-person tent (set up), sleeping pads, sleeping bags, cooking stove with fuel, and lantern.

Heritage Camping

Camp in a Tipi, Métis Trapper Tent, or Trapline Cabin. Immerse yourself in the lifestyle of the fur trade.
