Emancipation Day

Dear colleagues,

Tomorrow, on August 1, Canadians will mark Emancipation Day, commemorating the day the Slavery Abolition Act came into effect across the British Empire in 1834, including in the territory now known as Canada.

Emancipation Day offers an opportunity to reflect on the struggles, resilience, and legacy of people of African descent, and to reaffirm our commitment to inclusion, equity, and social responsibility.

We also acknowledge the official recognition of the Celebrations of Emancipation Day as a national historic event under Parks Canada’s National Program of Historical Commemoration. This designation highlights the importance of remembering and honouring the lasting contributions of people of African descent to Canada’s history and development.

Creating a workplace where everyone feels respected, valued, and included is a responsibility we share. Guided by the Parks Canada Values and Ethics Code and our Values and Operating Principles, we continue to foster an environment where diverse perspectives and experiences are welcomed.
