National Indigenous History Month

Dear colleagues,

June is National Indigenous History Month, an opportunity to celebrate and deepen our understanding of the diversities of First Nations, Inuit and Métis cultures, traditions and lived experiences.

As outlined in the Indigenous Stewardship Policy, Parks Canada supports Indigenous Peoples in maintaining and revitalizing cultural connections to lands, waters and ice across territories, treaty lands, and ancestral homelands. All team members have a part to play in this work, and a responsibility to continue building the knowledge and skills needed to support Indigenous stewardship in their roles.

For those who haven’t already, please take a moment either individually or with your team to explore the Indigenous Stewardship Living & Learning Journey ParksNet page, including this introductory video. Through real examples and scenarios from across Parks Canada, this resource highlights practical ways to engage thoughtfully and respectfully with Indigenous stewardship principles in our day-to-day work, while strengthening cross-cultural relationships in the workplace and with Indigenous partners.

Throughout June, the National Indigenous History Month ParksNet page will be updated weekly to highlight a range of stories, perspectives and initiatives that honour the histories, cultures and contributions of First Nations, Inuit and Métis. We encourage you to visit the page regularly and take part in learning opportunities that foster greater awareness, appreciation and understanding.
