Telecommunications Modernization Initiative (TMI)

Dear colleagues,

Parks Canada is participating in the Government of Canada-wide Telecommunications Modernization Initiative (TMI), a Government of Canada initiative led by Shared Services Canada (SSC). The initiative is focused on improving security, modernizing communication, simplifying services, and reducing unused or outdated telecommunications services.

The initiative includes three key areas:

What’s changing

  • Fewer landlines: unused or non-essential desk phones will be removed over time
  • Mobile device reviews: devices will be kept only where there is a clear operational need
  • Deployment of MFA hard tokens: employees will receive a small authentication device that will be used to securely sign in to Microsoft services without requiring a mobile phone

What is not changing

  • Microsoft Teams Phone (softphone) remains available to all Parks Canada employees
  • Employees in operational or business-critical roles that require mobile devices will continue to have access to them
  • Reliable communication and operational support remain a priority for Parks Canada

What this means for you

Employees will continue to have access to modern communication and collaboration tools, including Microsoft Teams Phone (softphone) and MFA authentication methods.

As part of this initiative, some employees may be contacted to confirm:

  • Whether a landline is still required
  • Whether a mobile device remains operationally necessary
  • Contact information or device details

What you need to do

  • Visit the Digital Resource Centre (DRC) to watch a short informational video about the TMI transition and upcoming changes, as well as more information and guidance
  • Watch for emails or instructions from your manager or IT
  • Complete any requested confirmations or updates related to contact information

*If you have any questions about this project or the upcoming changes, please contact ssn.infrastructureoperations.dss@pc.gc.ca. Please do not reply to this email, as replies to this mailbox are not monitored.*

These changes will strengthen security, simplify support, and reduce unnecessary costs while maintaining reliable communications across Parks Canada.

Thank you for your cooperation as we continue to modernize our digital services.

Sincerely,

Richard Barrette
