  • Guide place-based decisions, operations and communications

Parks Canada protects some of the most remarkable natural and historic places in the world and is legally responsible for how these special places are cared for.

Every national historic site, national park, marine conservation area, heritage canal and urban park administered by Parks Canada must have a management plan or statement. Management plans are developed with input from Indigenous governments, partners, stakeholders and the public, approved by Parks Canada leadership or the minister responsible for Parks Canada and tabled in Parliament as necessary. In some cases management plans are co-developed with Indigenous partners and other levels of government.

Management plans are available on the websites of national parks, national historic sites, national marine conservation areas, heritage canals and urban parks administered by Parks Canada. A searchable directory of management plans is also available on the Parks Canada website.

Management plans are one of the best ways to find out what Parks Canada is doing to protect for all time the irreplaceable natural and cultural values that are managed as part of Canada's system of protected heritage places.
