Issued: June 23, 2025
WASAGAMING, MB June 23, 2025 – Construction work to repair and upgrade the Lakeshore Trail and the Pier at the Main Beach in Riding Mountain National Park is now complete. These investments repaired damage caused by severe weather events in the spring and summer of 2022. The work improved two iconic visitor facilities, making them safer, more reliable, and more accessible for a wide variety of park guests. The Pier and the Lakeshore Trail are now open and ready to welcome visitors this summer.
Improvements to the Pier include:
- Strengthened structural protection with enhanced riprap (rocks and boulders).
- Replacement of the asphalt path with a wooden boardwalk.
- Rebuilt the wharf using metal sheet piles and rock ballast.
- Widening of the vegetated grassy area.
Improvements to the Lakeshore Trail include:
- Strengthened structural protection with enhanced riprap (rocks and boulders).
- Installed access ramps that allow users to access both ends of the trail without having to navigate stairs.
- Installed 10 new, stronger docks positioned to withstand waves and winds, including 3 wheelchair accessible swim docks with ladders.
- Enhanced rest areas along the trail so visitors can relax and take a break.
- Enhanced trail accessibility by providing a more even trail surface with improved drainage.
Parks Canada thanks visitors and community members for their patience during construction and celebrates the completion of both projects.
