REDUCING THE RISK OF WILDFIRE IN WASKESIU
Waskesiu Community Fuel Break Prescribed Fire

WASKESIU LAKE, SASKATCHEWAN, May 13, 2026 - Parks Canada is conducting a prescribed fire in the Waskesiu Community Fuel Break (CFB) in Prince Albert National Park on May 13, 2026.

Parks Canada takes wildfire preparedness seriously, including risk-reduction activities like prescribed fire, and oversees annual prescribed fires to reduce the risk posed by potential wildfires to the townsite of Waskesiu. Safe and effective fire management reduces the risk wildfires pose to the public, infrastructure and neighbouring lands while improving the ecological health of forests and grasslands. Prescribed fire is key to maintaining the CFB and keeping it effective. The prescribed fire burns off highly flammable dead grass and renews the fuel break ahead of peak wildfire season.

Parks Canada prioritizes the safety of people, infrastructure, and neighbouring lands during these operations. The prescribed fire requires 10 to 15 fire personnel and takes approximately half a day to complete. All fire management personnel follow standard operating procedures throughout the prescribed fire, including measures to ensure the safety of personnel and visitors. Fire personnel will also monitor the area for several days following the prescribed fire to ensure the fire is extinguished.  

An area closure is in effect south of the Waskesiu townsite during the prescribed fire and there may be additional road closures when work is being conducted along roadsides. Smoke will also be visible in and around Waskesiu.
