Expansion of Partial Closure Due to High Water Levels and Flows

Issued: May 28, 2025

Due to high water levels and flows, Parks Canada will be expanding the partial closure of navigation to restore seasonal levels as safely and efficiently as possible. The closure will include Lock 19 - Scotts Mills, and Lock 22 – Nassau Mills to Lock 27 – Youngs Point, effective 4 p.m. Thursday, May 29, 2025. The previously announced closures of Lock 1-Trenton to Lock 18 – Hastings also remain in effect until further notice.

Visitor and public safety are a priority for Parks Canada. The areas under closure are considered non-navigable at this time. Boaters must avoid these sections of the waterway until restrictions are lifted.

Lock 20 – Ashburnham, Lock 21 – Peterborough Lift Lock, and Lock 28 - Burleigh Falls to Lock 45 – Port Severn and the Murray Canal remain open to navigation. Boaters, residents, and visitors should exercise extreme caution near the river and especially near dams.

As a reminder, residents and boaters from Buckhorn Lake to Youngs Point, and from Swift Rapids to Georgian Bay, can expect high navigable water levels and flows during navigation hours, and increased flows outside of navigation hours until further notice. The increased flows overnight are the result of water management dam adjustments to address the higher-than-normal water levels caused by the recent precipitation. Residents are advised to exercise caution if travelling outside of Parks Canada hours of operation.

Over the past several days, the Trent-Severn’s watersheds have received twice the normal amount of precipitation and are forecasted to receive more in the coming days, bringing water levels well above normal navigational levels.

This partial closure will protect boater safety and help to prevent shoreline erosion and property damage experienced by local residents and businesses. All boaters are strongly encouraged to lower their speeds and watch their wake.

Parks Canada is maximizing outflows systemwide to the Bay of Quinte and Georgian Bay to reduce current water levels and is working diligently to reopen the entire system for navigation as soon as it is safe to do so.
