West Coast Trail: Information Update – Mt. Underwood Fire
Issued: August 13, 2025
Ends: October 10, 2025
Updated August 27, 2025
Next update: when conditions change
The West Coast Trail remains open. Parks Canada continues to work with the Huu-ay-aht, Ditidaht, and Pacheedaht First Nations to ensure safety while reducing strain on communities.
The Mount Underwood wildfire (discovered August 11 southwest of Port Alberni) is not directly affecting the West Coast Trail but it has made access challenging. The road between Bamfield and Port Alberni is closed, and the alternate Youbou–Lake Cowichan logging road traverses remote, rugged, backcountry conditions. Please use the West Coast Trail Express bus wherever possible.
If you choose to travel via the Youbou-Lake Cowichan logging road, please:
• Allow significantly more travel time than expected.
• Be aware cell service is unreliable.
• Ensure someone knows your expected arrival time.
• Carry at least one spare tire and be familiar with how to change it.
• Anticipate that emergency services may restrict travel to prioritize resident safety and essential services at any time.
Before you depart:
• Confirm your accommodation is operational and prepared to host guests. Knowing what restrictions may be in place will help you prepare for your visit.
• Make arrangements with the West Coast Trail Express Bus at: 250-477-8700 or bus@trailbus.com.
Specific recommendations for hikers:
• Northbound WCT hikers (starting at Gordon River): Park your vehicle at Gordon River (south end) and take the West Coast Trail Express Bus from the Pachena Trailhead back to your vehicle after your hike.
• Southbound WCT hikers (starting at Pachena): Park your vehicle at Gordon River and arrange to take the West Coast Trail Express Bus to Pachena Trailhead to begin your hike.
• Starting or ending the WCT at Balaats’adt (Nitinaht Village):
Park your vehicle at Gordon River and arrange to use the West Coast Trail Express Bus to reach Balaats’adt at the start of your hike or to return to your vehicle afterward.
