Moose population reduction program set to open in Terra Nova National Park
Issued: October 06, 2025
Ends: January 31, 2026
The moose population reduction program in Terra Nova National Park will soon commence for the 2025-26 season. Terra Nova National Park is represented by a single Moose Management Area (28A) and contains two distinct zones. Zone 1 is a Shared Access Area, allowing simultaneous use by visitors and harvesters, and encompasses most of the park. Zone 1 is open from Tuesday, October 14, 2025, to Saturday, January 31, 2026. Zone 2 areas are closed to hunting for the entire 2025-26 season. The moose population in Terra Nova National Park is managed in co-operation with the Newfoundland and Labrador Wildlife Division using their big-game licensing system. The program began in 2011 as an approach to mitigate the damaging impact that moose can have on forest regeneration when their numbers reach unnaturally high levels. Visitor safety is of the utmost importance to Parks Canada. Because Zone 1 allows for simultaneous use by hikers and harvesters, all users are required to pay particular attention to posted signage to understand where hunting is permitted. Parks Canada reminds harvesters of the requirement to wear blaze orange safety clothing when hunting. It is also recommended that visitors wear similar safety clothing when hiking trails in the park during this time. Harvesters and other individuals planning to visit the park are encouraged to review maps and safety information at: https://www.pc.gc.ca/en/pn-np/nl/terranova/nature/forets-forests. Parks Canada also reminds harvesters of the benefits of using non-toxic, lead-free ammunition. The use of non-lead products can reduce the harmful effects that lead-based ammunition can have on human, animal, and environmental health. Before their visit, visitors may contact Terra Nova National Park at 709-533-2801 or pc.infopnterra-nova-terranovanpinfo.pc@canada.ca for information on the accessibility of trails and facilities. - 30 -
