Superintendent’s Orders PROHIBITED ACTIVITIES

Issued: June 26, 2025

Nothing in these Orders shall be construed so as to abrogate or derogate from the protection provided for existing aboriginal or treaty rights of the aboriginal peoples of Canada by the recognition and affirmation of those rights in section 35 of the Constitution Act, 1982.

PROHIBITED ACTIVITIES

What: Pursuant to section 7(1) of the National Parks General Regulations, the Superintendent has designated the following activities as prohibited within Thaıdene Nëné National Park Reserve:

  • Visitor access to known and/or marked burial sites within 10 metres.

Where: Within the boundaries of Thaıdene Nëné National Park Reserve.

When: Year-round.

Why: These activities pose a risk to cultural resources.

Penalty: Violators may be charged under the Canada National Parks Act. Maximum penalty $25,000

What: The pollution of any watercourse, including the discharge of sewage is prohibited. Pursuant to section 16 of the National Parks General Regulations, it is unlawful to pollute any watercourse within a National Park. Additionally, sections 94 to 96 of Vessel Pollution and Dangerous Chemicals Regulations, made under the Canada Shipping Act, 2001, prohibit the discharge of sewage or sewage sludge into any freshwater body unless it has been treated to contain to more than 250 fecal coliforms per 100mL.

Where: All waterbodies within Thaıdene Nëné National Park Reserve.

When: Year-round.

Why: Sewage can cause harm to human health and the environment. Great Slave Lake and other waterbodies within Thaıdene Nëné are a source of drinking water.

RESTRICTED ACTIVITIES

What: Pursuant to section 7(1) of the National Parks General Regulations, the Superintendent has designated the following activity restrictions in Thaıdene Nëné National Park Reserve.

Other Restricted Activities

  • Construction and Alteration: The construction, erection, alteration, or significant repair of any structure (e.g., docks, tent platforms) is prohibited without a valid permit.
  • Research Activities: All natural, archaeological, and social science research or collection activities are prohibited without a valid permit.
  • Fuel and Food Storage: Storing, caching, or leaving petroleum products or food at any location is prohibited without a valid permit.
  • Military Exercises: All personnel and equipment operating on behalf of any Canadian or foreign armed forces for the purposes of training, or entry and travel by any means.
  • Unmanned Air Vehicles (UAV or Drones): Launching, landing, or use of a UAV is prohibited without a valid permit. The UAV shall remain cased is transported in a case or is wrapped and tied securely in such a manner that no part of the UAV is exposed. For the purposes of this order, a UAV is any powered device capable of sustained flight, which is controlled remotely or is self-operating, and does not carry passengers. This includes but is not limited to air or balloon drones, aeroplanes, quadcopters, rotorcraft or similar devices.

Where: Within the boundaries of Thaıdene Nëné National Park Reserve.

When: Year round

Why: These restrictions protect ecological integrity, and ensure visitor safety and responsible park use.

This is not an exclusive list of all restricted activities. Many activities are already regulated through existing legislation and agreements. Please see Rules and Regulations webpage for more information.

Permit Requirements:

A permit or licence (subject to special terms and conditions) is required, at all times of the year, prior to engaging in any of these activities throughout Thaıdene Nëné National Park Reserve:

  • Filming or photography for commercial purposes: National Parks of Canada Business Regulations section 3.
  • Commercial and business activities: National Parks of Canada Business Regulations section 3.
  • Aircraft access including operation of unmanned aerial vehicles (known as UAVs or drones): National Parks of Canada Aircraft Access Regulations section 3,4.
  • Fishing: Canada National Parks Act S. 41.5 (1).
  • Construction, installation or alteration of any structure: National Parks of Canada General Regulations section 7(5).
  • All natural, archaeological and social science research and collection: National Parks of Canada General Regulations section 7(5).
  • Food and fuel caching: National Parks of Canada General Regulations section 7(5).
  • All personnel and equipment operating on behalf of any Canadian or foreign armed forces for the purposes of training, or entry and travel by any means: National Parks of Canada General Regulations section 7(5).
  • Operation of unmanned air vehicles (UAV or Drones): National Parks of Canada General Regulations section 7(5).

The following do not require a separate permit, but are a condition of your registered entry in Thaidene Nëné National Park Reserve:

Fish Offal in Thaidene Nëné National Park Reserve: Pursuant to section 26(2) of the National Parks of Canada Fishing Regulations, fish offal must be disposed of in deep water, or moving water downstream of your camp, using a boat if available.
