Restricted Activity: Trail bicycling

Pursuant to Section 7(1) of the National Parks General Regulations, of the Canada National Parks Act, the following activity is restricted or prohibited by order of the Superintendent:

Trail bicycling is prohibited in Banff National Park, except on paved roads.

Exceptions: Trail bicycling is permitted on trail segments and networks listed below.

Note: All off-trail bicycling, and all activities associated with building and maintaining trails by unauthorized persons are prohibited.

Trail segments and networks where trail bicycling is permitted:

Permitted locations in the Town of Banff area – Maps A & B

1. Banff Legacy Trail – Maps A & B
Paved trail that parallels the Trans Canada Highway from Banff East Gate, through the town of Banff and along Vermillion Lakes Drive, to the east end of the Bow Valley Parkway. Includes the connector trail to Cascade Ponds Day-use Area.
Note: Between the town of Canmore and the Banff East Gate, the trail is named the Rocky Mountain Legacy Trail.

2. Brewster Creek Trail – Map A
From the junction with Healy Creek Trail to Sundance Lodge.

3. Bryant Creek Trail – Map A
From the Bryant Creek trailhead to the junction with the Trail Centre Warden Cabin access.
Note: Bryant Creek trailhead is accessed via Watridge Lake Trail, in Spray Valley Provincial Park, from the Mount Shark Day-use parking lot. This trail does cross the parks’ boundary numerous times.

4. Cascade Ponds-Bankhead Trail – Maps A & B
Maintained trail connecting Cascade Ponds and Lower Bankhead Interpretive Trail.

5. Cascade Valley Trail – Maps A & B
From Upper Bankhead Day-use Area to Stoney Creek Campground (CR15), including the connector from the Lake Minnewanka Road.

6. Fenland Loop – Maps A & B
Loop and connectors located at the northwest end of town.

7. Healy Creek Trail – Map A
From the Healy/Brewster parking lot to Sundance Trail junction.

8. Lake Minnewanka Trail – Map A & B
From the Lake Minnewanka Day-use Area to the East boundary of the park at Devil’s Gap.
Seasonals restrictions: From July 10th to September 15th, bicycling is prohibited from Stewart Canyon Bridge to East boundary of the park at Devil’s Gap.

9. Lower Sulphur Mountain Area – Maps A & B
Maintained trail system located south of Cave Avenue, west of Spray Avenue, north of the Sulphur Mountain Parking lots and bound by Mountain Avenue to the west.

10. Redearth Creek Trail – Map A
From Redearth Creek trailhead to Shadow Lake Trail junction.
10x. Shadow Lake Trail: From December 15th to March 15th only, trail bicycling is permitted on Shadow Lake Trail from the junction with Redearth Creek Trail to Shadow Lake Lodge cabins.

11. Rundle Riverside Trail – Maps A & B
From Rundle Riverside trailhead (Golf Course Road) to the South boundary of the park.
Note: At the Canmore Nordic Centre, the trail becomes Rundle Connector before intersecting with EKG Trail.

12. Sundance Trail – Maps A & B
Paved trail from the Cave and Basin National Historical Site to the Sundance Canyon Loop; including the unpaved Marsh Loop.

13. Stoney Mountain Area – Maps A & B

  • 13a. Upper Stoney Trail: Loop starting at Mount Norquay’s ski area parking lot and connecting with Lower Stoney.
  • 13b. Lower Stoney Trail: Trail connecting Mount Norquay’s ski area to the Trans-Canada Highway.

14. Spray River Trails – Maps A & B

  • 14a. Spray River West: From Spray River West trailhead to Spray River bridge junction.
  • 14b. Spray River East: From Spray River East trailhead (Golf Course Road) to Spray River Bridge junction. Includes Spray Quarry Trail, Spray River East Side Connector Trail, and Spray River Connector Trail.
  • 14c. Spray River and Goat Creek: From Spray River Bridge junction to Goat Creek trailhead (at Banff National Park boundary).

Note: Goat Creek Trail continues to Goat Creek Day Use’s parking lot in Spray Valley Provincial Park.

15. Spray Road West Trail – Map A
From Bryant Creek Trail to Banff National Park boundary cutline at the edge of the Middle Spray River Valley (Canyon Dam Area).
This trail segment connects Bryant Creek Trail to Spray Lake Westside Road in Spray Valley Provincial Park.
Note: This trail segment crosses the Banff National Park and Spray Valley Provincial Park boundaries numerous times.

16. Sulphur Mountain Westside Trail – Maps A & B
From Sundance Trail junction to Sanson’s Peak Boardwalk junction.
Note: Bikes are prohibited on the boardwalks.

17. Tunnel Mountain Bench Area – Maps A & B
Network of maintained trails, located south of Banff Avenue, west of the Cascade River, north of the Bow River and east of the town of Banff.
Note: Trail Bicycling is not permitted on these segments of the network:

  • Hoodoos Interpretive Trail
  • Tunnel Mountain Summit Trail
  • Corrals to Tunnel Mountain Campground
  • Corrals to Tunnel Mountain Road

18. Water Tower Trail – Maps A & B
Maintained trail connecting Cascade Ponds and Johnson Lake Day-use Areas.

Permitted locations in the Lake Louise Area – Map C

19. Bow River Trail
From the Lake Louise Campground or Bow River Bridge opposite of the historic Lake Louise train station (Station Restaurant).

20. Great Divide (Old 1A Hwy) Trail
From the trailhead at 3.6 km mark of Lake Louise Drive to the Lake O’Hara Road in Yoho National Park.

21. Louise Creek Trail
From the Great Divide Trail junction uphill to the junction with the Tramline Trail only.

22. Moraine Lake Highline Trail
From a small parking area 2.5 km up Moraine Lake Road to the Moraine Lake Day-use Area.

23. Pipestone Trail
From the Pipestone trailhead off Slate Road, just west of the community of Lake Louise, along the designated bike trail to the turnaround point at 6.5 km, including the trail to Mud Lake.

24. Tramline Trail
From the Bow River trail junction to the main parking lot at Lake Louise Lakeshore.
