Reopening of Quttinirpaaq National Park

Issued: March 18, 2022

Ends: September 19, 2023

IQALUIT, NUNAVUT March 18, 2022 – Following the gradual easing of public health restrictions in Nunavut, Parks Canada will reopen Auyuittuq and Quttinirpaaq national parks to visitors, effective March 18, 2022.

Visitors wishing to schedule registration sessions for the upcoming year may contact Parks Canada for Auyuittuq and Quttinirpaaq national parks. Guests are encouraged to visit the respective park websites to learn more about permitted activities, visitor safety and travel planning, including contact information and hours of operations for park offices. Orientation and registration remain mandatory for all visitors before entering Nunavut national parks.

Parks Canada reminds Canadians to continue monitoring and observing all applicable travel restrictions, as well as federal, territorial and local public health guidance, and to make every effort to keep one another safe.

National parks in Nunavut are often reached from nearby communities through licenced outfitters. Potential visitors should check with park staff to confirm who has a valid park business licence. Parks Canada is recommending visitors begin making travel arrangements well in-advance of their planned travel dates to ensure the services and facilities they require are available. Businesses wishing to apply as a licensed operator in a Nunavut national park for 2022 should contact its respective park office.

Acting on advice from park Inuit / government planning and management committees, Parks Canada closed national parks in Nunavut to visitors by superintendent’s order on March 18, 2020 in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Inuit exercising rights under the Nunavut Agreement continued to have access to all Parks Canada sites in Nunavut during these closures. Auyuittuq National Park opened in a limited capacity to visitors on August 1, 2021, then closed on December 23, 2021 due to the spread of COVID-19 in the territory.
