Abbot Pass Refuge Cabin Remembrance
Abbot Pass Refuge Cabin National Historic Site (also known as Abbot Pass Hut) was dismantled in 2022. Despite significant efforts to save the structure, melting permafrost caused the slope to erode underneath the foundation of the hut. Parks Canada made the difficult decision to dismantle this beloved place for safety.
Parks Canada is working with the Alpine Club of Canada, stakeholders, Indigenous groups and interested parties to identify options for commemorating the story of the hut and its importance to mountaineering in Canada.
