Long Beach Unit: WARNING - Wolves in Area

Issued: September 18, 2025

WHY: Wolves have increased their attempts and boldness to prey on dogs, including large, leashed dogs. Reports indicate an increasing level of habituation, which includes very close encounters with visitors, with and without dogs. The goal is to reduce the probability of negative human-wolf encounters.

VISITOR ADVICE:
Stay safe and avoid a wolf encounter:
• Dogs are an attractant to wolves. Leave your pet at home.
• Keep children close.
• Carry bear spray, ensure it is accessible, and know how to use it.
• Do not hike alone and avoid areas with low human activity.
• Stay alert and watch for signs such as tracks and droppings.
• Respect all warnings, closures, and restrictions.

If you see a wolf:
• DO NOT RUN, do not crouch down.
• Pick up small children, and keep the group together.
• Back away slowly, maintaining eye contact with the animal as you leave.
• Yell, wave your arms, look large; and if you have one, use an air horn.

If a wolf approaches you:
• Throw sticks and stones etc.
• If the aggression escalates, use your bear spray and fight back.
