Public notice: Changes to random camping restrictions in 6-Pass area
Issued: March 04, 2026
Effective date:
March 4, 2026
Winter restrictions on human activities in the 6-Pass area have been in place since October 2013, with summer restrictions in place since April 2022. Starting in March 2026, winter random camping will be permitted in the 6-Pass area, while all summer restrictions will remain in place.
What’s restricted:
By order of the Jasper Field Unit Superintendent, no overnight random camping is permitted between April 16 and November 30 in the 6-Pass area. Day use activities (i.e. scrambling or climbing) are permitted during April 16 through November 30. Random camping is permitted between December 1 and April 15. A permit is required for random camping; information about how to obtain a permit is available here. Winter random camping in the 6-Pass area is subject to quotas, with a maximum number of 20 people per month.
Background:
To reduce impacts to endangered caribou populations, the Brazeau caribou range (including the 6-pass area) was closed to winter use in October 2013. As of March 2025, the Brazeau range is considered depopulated of caribou, and winter impacts of backcountry skiers on caribou are not a current consideration. However, the 6-Pass route is within important wolverine habitat, and winter quotas are in place to limit impacts on wolverine.
During the summer season, overnight random camping creates a high potential for human impact on grizzly bears and other wildlife, as well as an increased risk of human-wildlife conflict. During April 16 through November 30, camping is permitted only on the adjacent Maligne Pass route in backcountry campgrounds only.
Parks Canada’s first priority is the protection of ecological integrity, including habitat security for grizzly bears and other wildlife in the Maligne and 6-Pass areas.
Your role in protecting wildlife in the 6-Pass area is important and appreciated.
