Restricted Activities

RESTRICTED ACTIVITIES
EFFECTIVE DATE: May 13, 2025
The following restrictions apply under the authority of Section 7(1) of the National Parks General Regulations, which is stated as follows: “The Superintendent may, where it is necessary for the proper management of the park to do so, designate certain activities, uses or entry and travel in areas in a park as restricted or prohibited.”
• Metal Detectors – The use of metal detectors in Elk Island National Park is prohibited.
• Motor Powered Vessels – The use of motor powered vessels (including electric) in Elk Island National Park is prohibited.
• Camping – Camping is restricted to designated camp sites only. Camping outside a designated camp site is strictly prohibited.
• Kites – The flying of kites and all similar kite items is restricted to the Astotin Lake Day Use Area.
• Kite Fighting – Kite fighting or competitive kite flying, or the use of sharp nylon, synthetic strings coated with powdered glass or metal, abrasive coated line (manja), or kevlar string is prohibited within Elk Island National Park.
• Remote motion-activated trail cameras – A research permit issued by Parks Canada is required to deploy remote motion-activated cameras within Elk Island National Park.
AREAS CLOSED
Pursuant to Section 7(1) of the National Parks General Regulation the following areas are hereby closed and restricted to authorized personnel only by order of the superintendent within Elk Island National Park:
• Plains bison handling facility, including all walkways, pens and pastures.
• Wood bison handling facility, including all walkways, pens and pastures.
• Operations compound.
• Staff residences, including all yard space and road access.
PENALTY: Violators may be charged under the Canada National Parks Act: maximum penalty $25 000.
