Info-Work: Hamlet Bridge to Close for Replacement

Trent-Severn Waterway National Historic Site

November 23, 2018, Peterborough, ONNOTICE: Parks Canada would like to advise the community that the Hamlet Bridge on the Severn River will close for replacement on Friday, December 14th, 2018. The Hamlet Bridge is located at Peninsula Point Road and Canning Road 49, between the Townships of Severn and Gravenhurst. Detours will be in place via Highway 11. Motorists are asked to plan their routes accordingly.

Extensive inspections and repairs over the last number of years have led to the decision to fully replace both the fixed and swing portions of the Hamlet Bridge. The Hamlet Bridge will be replaced with one of a similar look to preserve the historic landscape of the area, though with an upgraded capacity for service and emergency vehicles. The bridge will be removed from the site, the road abutments and east pier will be fully replaced, the mechanical and electrical systems will be upgraded, and the bridge operator’s building will be replaced.

The bridge will be closed for an estimated eight months. More information regarding the bridge’s re-opening will be provided at a later date.

This work is part of Parks Canada’s $3 billion investment over 5 years to support infrastructure work to heritage, tourism, waterway, and highway assets located within national historic sites, national parks, and national marine conservation areas across Canada.
