Wrecks of HMS Erebus and HMS Terror National Historic Site

Photo galleries

The discovery of HMS Erebus and HMS Terror provides an exceptional opportunity to shed light on the mystery surrounding the Franklin expedition. The mission of Parks Canada’s underwater archaeologists is to work collaboratively with Inuit to study these shipwrecks lost in Arctic waters for over 170 years. During excavations, they record the context and position of artifacts and remains to understand their spatial organization, their use and how they were manufactured. Each object that is brought to the surface is photographed, shared with Nunavummiut, then brought to Parks Canada labs in the south for further analysis and stabilization prior to being presented to the wider public.
