Prince of Wales Fort guided tours

Prince of Wales Fort National Historic Site

Explore Prince of Wales Fort's wind-swept ruins, be struck with awe by Cape Merry's stunning panorama or hike into history!

Prince of Wales Fort

Follow wooden boardwalks across tundra ablaze with purple fireweed towards the remote, wind-swept stone ruins of an early 18th-century Hudson’s Bay Company fur trade fortress. Old British cannon mounted atop the massive stone parapets point in all directions as they once did – across the land and sea where passing beluga whales stand out starkly white against a grey Hudson Bay.

Join a guided tour of the multi-level fortification where reconstruction and archaeological digs are ongoing projects. Visit the remains of the powder magazine, learning about the conflicts between the British and French. The eloquently carved signatures of historic people who passed through the rampart walls bring the stones to life, transporting you back to an exciting and adventurous time in Canada’s founding days.

Availability: July and August, dependent on weather and tides.

Sloop Cove hikes

Zip in a Zodiac to Sloop Cove, Prince of Wales Fort’s winter harbour 3.2 kilometres (2 miles) up the Churchill River – now high and dry, the site has risen several metres since the 1700s, rebounding from the weight of long-gone glaciers.

Meet Parks Canada guides who introduce you to Hudson’s Bay Company men through their signatures – 18th-century graffiti – engraved into stones. Hike easily in their footsteps across tundra ablaze with wildflowers 4 kilometres (2.5 miles) along the shores of Hudson Bay back to the fort watching seabirds and shorebirds, spotting beluga whales in the waters. Find fossils hundreds of millions of years old and drop in at archaeological sites to gain a sense of the rich history of the people who forged an existence here. Then catch a Zodiac across the river and back into the 21st century!

  • The Sloop Cove hike is approximately 4 kilometres over uneven ground and may not be suitable for individuals with mobility issues.
  • Proper footwear, clothing and a water bottle are recommended.
