Louis Riel Day: A Celebration of Métis Culture and Legacy

Join us on Saturday, November 15, for a vibrant event celebrating the enduring legacy of Louis Riel, a visionary Métis leader who played a key role in founding Manitoba and advancing the rights and identity of Métis communities across Canada.

 

Programs

🕑 Activities Throughout the Day:

Big House (Upstairs)
Join Métis artist Lisa Shepherd for a beading circle and live demos, and explore exhibit celebrating Métis culture and history with Elder Ken Pruden. Don’t miss the Chief Dan George exhibit, also on display.

Big House (Downstairs)
Meet Metis Nation BC representation from Ministry of Education, Ministry of Health, and the Amelia Douglas Institute.

Theatre
Drop by the Waceya Métis Society booth to watch button-making and gauntlet crafting in action. (Class is full, but visitors are welcome to observe from 10:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.)

Fort Grounds
Enjoy Métis games with Ken Robillard and his team, and try your hand at (plastic) axe throwing at the Golden Ears Métis Society booth.

Visitor Centre
Browse the Metis Maker's market and Spirit Bear Designs Gift Shop for unique finds.

Ancestor Café
Take a break and enjoy a treat — the café is open all day.

11 am – Cooperage | Presentation: Colonization through Resource Extraction
Discover how colonial trade practices shaped the land and communities that followed.

12 pm – Storehouse  | Presentation: Fort 101: A Journey Through History
Get a fascinating overview of Fort Langley’s past and its role in shaping British Columbia.

 1 pm – Servants’ Quarters | Presentation: Fort Workers from Around the World

Learn about the diverse people who lived and worked at the fort during its fur trade days.

2 pm – Servants’ Quarters | Presentation: Gold Rush and Its Consequences
Explore how the gold rush transformed the region and its lasting impacts on local communities.

3 pm – Kitchen Shelter | Baking demonstration and tasting
Wrap up your day by sampling some delicious baked goods by our interpreter using the traditional clay oven.
