Privacy impact assessment summary for the National Program for Ecological Corridors
Description
The network of protected and conserved areas in Canada plays a key role in the support of biodiversity conservation. To continue to play this role effectively, protected and conserved areas must also be connected to one another. Ecological corridors are links that allow species and natural processes to move freely across landscapes.
The National Program for Ecological Corridors supports the creation of ecological corridors across Canada to maintain and restore connectivity between protected and conserved areas and other core habitats. The program is delivered in collaboration with Indigenous partners, other levels of government, experts, and stakeholders. Key activities include the development of national criteria for ecological corridors, the identification and mapping of priority areas, support for on-the-ground corridor projects that improve ecological connectivity and measures to inspire and catalyze action by others for ecological corridors and connectivity.
Why a privacy impact assessment was completed
A Privacy Impact Assessment (PIA) was conducted for the National Program for Ecological Corridors because program activities such as engagement, collaboration, and funding may involve the collection, use, and potential disclosure of personal information. The PIA assesses and addresses potential privacy risks to ensure compliance with the Privacy Act and Treasury Board Secretariat requirements.
Additional information
Overall, Parks Canada complies with the Privacy Act and Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat privacy policy instruments. The collection of personal information is limited, and individuals are informed of the purposes of collection through a privacy notice statement.
Low levels of risk were identified in relation to information retention and disposal. To mitigate the identified risks, Parks Canada is developing disposition schedules in collaboration with Library and Archives Canada and has integrated required information management enhancements into its long term planning and implementation activities. Full implementation is expected by March 31, 2029.
